The Philips Velo

Original Velo 1 Review
The Velo 1 is generally considered to be the best of the first generation CE machines. It's shipping as the Velo 500 in various guises. The main points of the Velo 1 are it has an 480 x 240 screen, backlight, docking cradle which allows connection to your desktop (and doubles as a charger for the batteries) and a built in 19200 modem for e-mail and web access. The keyboard is okay, it's never going to beat that of the Psion 5.

The CE Desktop Applications include Pocket Word and Excel. Both are fairly basic, Word supporting RTF type files. Excel has several functions, including ones such as VLOOKUP, NPV, etc..

I couldn't believe this but you cannot print from anything using the IR. Shocking omission which is remedied in CE 2.0. A company called bSquare has a utility out which allows this. CE 1.0 comes with Pocket Internet Explorer and Inbox. An upgrade is available to take Pocket IE to 1.1. IE works surprisingly well when surfing, although you need CE 2.0 to check pages with frames. Inbox works fairly well too as you can fax as well as e-mail using this app. However, functionality is missing here too where it is not possible to e-mail attachments. Thankfully this has been addressed in CE 2.0. Inbox The other apps include Contacts, a contacts database which will synchronise with Schedule+ or Outlook, Tasks and Calendar which chart all your appointments in a variety of user definable ways.
CE Services Version 2.2 Available
The latest version of CE is now available for the Velo. Check out the site of the manufacturer of your handheld.

ROM Upgrade To HPC PRO?
More rumour about there being a ROM upgrade being supplied by Microsoft. Know more? E-mail me.

Velo Range Discontinued
The Velo has been discontinued. Something like 90% of CE machines sold by Philips are Ninos. Lets hope the support doesn't stop.
